Quality and Functionality issues encountered…
Encountered an issue where Receiver Lens cap fell off pc board when detector was removed from package.Detector worked with onboard laser but not external Ted or Green Laser. Therefore could not use this for my project.

-UPDATED- Great little module, has a small issue but is easily worked around
See original review below. It seems the duty cycle on the laser diode is quite poor. I've had the sensor going for a solid 15 days with intermittent hours long usages before that since purchase. On the 15th day of 24/7 use it stopped working, the laser diode appears to be barely outputting any light. Even when holding your hand directly in front of the diode it's barely visible in the dark. On the bright side I soldered a new laser diode from an inexpensive laser pointer in place and it's working fine once again. I'll have to add a relay to turn the board on when I expect the laser to be tripped. Since this is installed in a a claw machine I'll only need to turn it on when the claw drops and off when it resets to home. You can see the machine here.https://www.twitch.tv/clawarcade-ORIGINAL-Using this as a trip sensor for a crane machine. It works fine if you're using it at a distance but I'm using it for a space 1.5' across. If i mount the laser so it's pointing straight across the box where the prizes drop through it stays in an always tripped state, imagine putting this inside a show box shining straight across it to detect if something is put inside it. To fix the issue i mount the laser in the top right corner of the shoe box pointing to ALMOST the bottom left corner, sort of a diagonal. The laser has to bounce off the side of the box it cannot be directly pointed at the corner otherwise it stays tripped. For longer distances, say 3' or so this works perfectly fine and the issue doesn't present itself. It also randomly trips when I point it near lights, especially florescent lights.Once I realized this and figured out the best way to mount it, it worked flawlessly. I'm very happy with the purchase other than the issue described above. I'll likely buy it again for future projects knowing this limitation.

Highly recommended
This was a surprise, I was expecting a typical infrared obstacles detector. But MUCH better. They have tuned the laser to a frequency. I got no interference no matter the lighting conditions.

This laser works great. When it works
This laser works great. When it works.A team of students and I used this laser sensor on-board an autonomous rover that was designed to be capable of obstacle detection and avoidance. This rover was required to run outside, and the obstacles were trees.Firstly, the laser is tripped very easily by sunlight. This is great, if that's the functionality you're looking for. But we essentially can't run our rover in sunlight unless it's nearly exactly high noon. Secondly, this laser has a great amount of difficulty either detecting dark or textured objects (i.e. tree bark). Effective distance decreases tremendously with certain colors of objects.I'm mainly giving two stars for this product because none of us have heard back from the support team about how to solve these issues. I will change the rating of my review as soon as someone from the support team responds to either me or any of my team members.

Useless
Affected by ambient lighting in an office environment. Effectively useless.

Five Stars
Bought 2 for a Start/Finish Gate Timer with the Raspberry Pi and they work well!
