great product
I telephoned Aico prior to purchase they were most helpful and although I was told could not purchase on Amazon obviously I did! It was to replace the older model so the good news is the base plate was the same so a 30 second job to install. tested been installed now for over 48hrs works a treat! Thank you Aico! 100% recommend.

Good replacements for older models
Very easy to swap out older models for the new ones, a bit pricey when you have 8 to replace plus very wasteful on back plates that are thrown away. They look better than the older models however how good are they when a fire breaks out I do not know. The old ionising alarms gave false alarms where these do not but do they give you enough time to vacate the building? The other down side is replacing the battery after 5 years when the life of the unit is ten.

Even mains-wired alarms need replacement, this fits the old Alco Ei 141
I hadn't realised main-wired smoke alarms had an expiry date on a sticker attached to the outside of the alarm. Only when one malfunctioned did I spot it was 5 years beyond its lifespan. The smoke alarm detaches from the baseplate, there are instructions on it, but essentially push a screwdriver into a slot that is one side of the alarm to depress the catch then pull the alarm firmly across the ceiling in the same direction (you've probably already done this to replace the back-up battery at some stage). Apparently you're supposed to disconnect the alarm from the electics by flipping the relevant switch in the fuse box before doing this, but I only discovered this aferwards and it didn't sem to make any difference. You can keep the old baseplate attached to the ceiling, though so far as I can see you still have to buy the whole alarm with baseplate (which is why folks are trying to sell new baseplates on an auction site). The Ei146E smoke alarm fits the baseplate for the old Ei141 (and doubtless other models, but you'd need to Google), so it's just a case of sliding one out and sliding the other in. The Ei146 came with a Duracell battery included, so ignore Amazon's weird option of buying additional batteries. Also as these alarms come with an expiry date and they should be replaced every 10 years or so, it was good news to see the one I bought direct from Amazon has an expiry date of 10/2034, just under 11 years. Which you can't tell from looking at the box as it's a sticker on the alarm itself.

Works great read review for more info on how it works
Was a bit worried about buying this especially as it’s for my family safety especially with some of the reviews some even showed a video on placing a burning paper under the alarm and it failing to go offI think the manufacturer needs to add more info to the item which is missing so thought I would add it hereMy original smoke alarm has been working for 10 years but decided to wake me at 4am going off and unable to switch it off I took a hammer to it 😂I soon realised that it was a older model and they no longer come as smoke and heat alarms it’s either one or the other which to be honest was a blessing as ours kept going off every time the wife spent longer than 4 mins in the shower from the heatI wanted the same brand as it. Was already wired in and the base plate was still in place so I could just click it upI did notice the manufacturer does clearly state to use a screw driver to press the tab to release from the plate attached to the ceiling after seeing a few reviews people saying they had to snap there’s which I treid and it does come back down as easy as goes upRight the important bit I treid the fire test with cardboard burning under it in fact it melted slightly and still did not go off so thought I had a dud but thought I change the battery repeated again no alarm so thought perhaps it’s got to charge for a bit left it plugged in on ceiling and sure enough 1 hr later it went off with the test as expected so perhaps the people saying they had a faulty one did not allow the battery to charge

Check that it’s the correct one you need
Alarm itself is good, the issue that you have to deal with is that it does what you want, I had to buy another base which cost more than the detector itself to be able to connect the alarms to work together?

Replacement
Recently found out that smoke detectors are supposed to be replaced every 10 years. Like for like replacement. Not too difficult to fit, but sliding off the old ones (these have the same fitting) can be a bit stiff and likely to "fly out of control" when pushed.
