This was a lifesaver for me. The Windows 10 operating system on my older PC crashed. It had a 1 terabyte internal hard drive and another internal 2 TB hard drive. I won't go into all the things I tried to repair the main drive, but trust me, the operating system was FUBAR. So I figured I would try to see if I could somehow read the drives without the OS.So I bought this external hard drive reader and it turned out to be the perfect solution for me. It was easy to use; I plugged in each hard drive that I had removed from my PC and connected it to the USB3 port on my laptop computer. My laptop recognized the external drive, and fortunately for me most of my personal data was still there. From my laptop I was able to run a Window's disk repair (chkdsk command with /f and /r parameters) and was able to extract important data and save it to my laptop, which I then copied to other drives.I used to have an old clunky external hard drive reader that was pretty much useless. But this one is like the Swiss army knife of external drive adapters. It's pretty ingenious how the the various connectors can fit most any hard drive.Anyone who has experienced that sinking feeling when their PC suddenly displays the "blue screen of death" or other software failures will hopefully, like me, bring their blood pressure back down when they realize all is not lost. I realize that there are some computer problems caused by a hard drive's mechanical failure that are not easy to extract data from. But for the low price on this hard drive reader, it's well worth trying.

Cost + Value + Need = Perfect
Worked perfect right out of the box. Had several hard drives from old laptops and desktops that dies over the years. finally ordered this and went through each one. Removed files that I wanted to keep and then reformatted the drives for future reuse or to dispose of if they had bad sectors etc. great product for the task.
J**.
it would of worked if it wasnt for years of storage
bought it to read old hard drive for my aunt in hopes to pull anything off it. yeah no 15+ years sitting silent it remains that way. tho it does work, the hard drive was just done.

The brand name says it all....P.O.S.ugear
Bought this unit to transfer important data from a couple old 2TB IDE drives. Followed instruction for connection and operation. Kept getting an unknown USB device (set address failed) error. I unplugged and tried again only to get same error...over and over again. I made all the adjustments to my computer that Google experts told me to make. I tried a different HD. I tried a different laptop. All gave me same errors. This POSugear is definitely not worth buying!!!

Does everything it says it can!
Sadly, few things are as described or as promised. But this one??? It's fantastic.Everything you need is in the box - device, USB 3.0 'beefy' cable, power supply, and small power jack for IDE drives.I ran this thing successfully on 5 drives - 2 of which were old IDE drives. 1 drive I connected was questionable and did not spin up. I don't recall if it was dead 2 years ago or if the device wouldn't work with it but I'm 98% sure it's the old drive's issue.READ THIS! When connecting old IDE drives, this works just fine. But you need to read the fine manual that comes with it. You MUST select MASTER / SINGLE DRIVE with your jumpers on your old IDE drive. Usually a drive shows the location of the jumper on the label with these old drives. It won't work with cable select which is where most of these IDE drives have their jumpers. Once you get this corrected, you'll be able to power up and see the drive post.If you deal with data recovery, either for yourself or others, this is a vital tool to own at a very affordable price. If only we had something this small, compact, and fast 30 years ago when I started in professional I.T.
