Pelican Protector 1700 Series Rifle Cases

The case is very solid and very well made. It is much heavier than expected, but not ridiculous. My rating for only 4 stars is the 3 sheets of solid foam. While an exact cutout looks very clean and nice, that effort took 2 and a half hours to cut and shave 3 individual layers to fit the weapon. I would have preferred to have 1/2" "tear out" blocks in each sheet.

I just deleted everything I wrote once I realized most if not all of it has been said already. I agree with the general consensus that this is a PHENOMENAL case that will last you a lifetime and yes, that additional $100 versus the competitor is justifiable. With all of that said, there are a few things that I would like to point out for potential buyers: - The instructions suggest chalk for outlining. I tried this and I didn't like it in comparison to using the sharpie. I found the sharpie to give me a better outline. If you are worried about the permanent lines showing, I will address that in another bullet point. - By all means, I would STAY AWAY from using a hot knife or a hot wire. My experience with a hot knife was abysmal and a hot wire is not worth the effort, time, or money (if you buy one) to use. A hot wire will give you darn near professional level results though. Buy an electric/turkey carving knife. They can easily be had for under $20, don't generate fumes, and have other uses outside of foam cutting. If you take your time, you will get 90% close to results that were done with a machine. Watch plenty of tutorials online because there is a learning curve. You'll thank me later. - Speaking of cutting foam, I noticed that my results on the reverse side did not mirror that of the side I cut on. Maybe I suck at cutting or maybe this is the nature of the beast. If you intend to flip the foam, do keep this in mind. - I said previously that I would address the sharpie lines issue. I did some research and found that plastidip is a fantastic product that will make the foam more rigid AND improve the appearance. One can and five coats later will hide your sharpie lines. This is a great alternative to flipping your foam. I haven't done this myself yet but have seen excellent results of plastidipped foam online. I will update this review after I have tried this. - Instructions suggest using an adhesive to merge the middle and bottom foam pieces together. My research has returned that you can either use 3M aerosol spray adhesive or hot glue. I haven't tried either yet but I think hot glue would be my personal preference since it's easily controllable and I have one in the house. Again, I will update this review after trying that. - Replacement foam CAN be expensive. It can range from $30-$80 but you won't find the lower prices unless you really search. I found cheaper foam replacements (same quality) on a popular site that starts with a vowel and ends with Bay. I managed to snag a 3pc set for $47 shipped. Additionally, I found that another type of foam called "Kaizen" is far better quality but carries a premium. I might give that a try next time I have to transport different firearms.- Pelican does not have a convenient or time efficient way to place orders for the nameplate. In this day and age and a company as wealthy as Pelican, I shouldn't have to snail mail a form in for the price of $15 + postage only to wait a few days to a week to process my order. Again, I wandered over to my site that starts with a vowel and ends with Bay. I entered my information in the message to the seller and received a lovely plate with my information on it shipped for $16.11 to my door in two days.That's all I have to say for now. After I travel in a week, I'll be sure to update this review with how my case faired in the hands of the TSA along with my results of plastidipping and hot gluing my case.(1/25/17) EDIT: I've returned from my trip as of 1/23 and I am thoroughly satisfied. Here are some additional notes: - 3M 77 is the best adhesive you can use to join this type of foam together. I initially tried using hot glue but it didn't settle right. The 3M stuff is nothing short of magic as it sprays easy and adheres incredibly well. - The plastidip tip that I picked up while browsing the web worked fantastic. After gluing both pieces of foam together, I put them on saw horses and applied 4-5 coats of the stuff with 15-30 minutes in between and let it dry for about 5-8 hours before placing it in my case for the trip. Not only does it look good but it should keep moisture out by sealing the foam.- Lastly, I feel like the case held up incredibly well in transport. Nothing was broken during my travels and to my surprise the finish seems to be pretty resilient to scratches.I must say I am nothing short of impressed. I'll be buying more Pelican cases in the future.

The Pelican 1750 is my favorite rifle case! Fantastic!

This is a great case. I've always been a fan of Pelican's gear. Whether it be for my photography gear or arsenal of guns, they always get the job done and see that whatever is inside gets to where it is going safely. I bought this to store and transport my LWRC AR-15 and Sig P220. It holds both well with plenty of extra space for accessories. The hinges are of sturdy construction, and made of good construction material. The exterior is flawlessly crafted, with a folding handle (a nice touch not all cases like this are smart enough to have) and smooth, positive latches. The interior fits any AR, even those with a lot of accessories, and there's still room for magazines, etc. The wheels are a welcome feature, too, especially when traveling with several bags. Pelican cases are not lightweight so the shorter length saves a few pounds over the longer model. It's a trade off that this case can't be used with longer guns but being a few pounds lighter and being shorter can be a big help if you travel a lot.Cutting the foam - this is my first pelican case and I found it pretty easy to cut the foam. There are YouTube videos online that are helpful to watch first. Basically, take out the middle layer that you will cut. Layout your items reverse of exactly how you want them so you can cut the foam then flip it over to get the correct layout. Be sure to distribute the weight as best you can so the case isn't awkward to carry. The solid foam inserts are easy to cut but hold their shape well, even when thinned out when cut close to the edge. I'd advise you to use a Sharpie to draw an outline of whatever it may be you'll be carrying in the case and proceed to cut a 1/4 of an inch inside the outline to ensure a tight fit around your possessions to eliminate any movement in the case. I used an electric fillet knife to cut the foam. I cut the foam on my bar top, pulling the foam over the edge of the table as I cut to let the knife pierce and cut freely. I got the best cuts by holding the knife straight up and down at a 90 degree angle. I'm particular about these types of things and the results were better than expected. After the final cut, I put several coats of Plastic Coat spray to give the foam a firm feel. It also holds the shape better.My rifle with the scope mounted, pistol and all the accessories fit fine in this case and I am 100% happy.

The foam insert is appropriate but it would be helpful to know that the foam insert also comes precut into grids.

Received the 1700 case a few weeks ago and have used it a couple of times. Its well made, robust and seals tight. Cutting the foam with clean lines is challenging. I tried cutting foam without the recommended electric carving knife and ended up with cosmetic knife marks. This has no affect on Functional. The 1700 accommodates 2 break action shotguns (30") easily. 32" inch barrels would also work but likely not 34s. ?I purchased four locks as well. this case has four lock locations and most airlines apparently require that each be filled.Excellent price for this case.

Everything I could ask for in a rifle case. After finally biting the bullet to upgrade my rifle, I now see a need to properly protect it. The solid foam in this is annoying to cut, but ultimately worth it in the end. This thing locks up so tight I read that people should add absorption packets to the interior.Very pleased with this case, I feel perfectly comfortable placing my rifle in the box of my truck with this. The only problem is now I can't see myself buying anything either than pelican cases for my other toys.Thanks for a great product

Very strong construction.Hinge and latches excellent.Case is heavy so the handles are stout and wheels handy for pulling across flat solid surfaces.

Lo compré para mi guitarra (aunque por lo general se compran para guardar rifles) y le quedó perfecto, no sin antes tomar las mediciones correctas. Lo único malo es que mi guitarra queda un poco apretada y marca el foam superior, pero nada grave.Con este estuche, ya tengo 2 Pelican (adjunto fotos).
