Never a dull moment when king Kurt pi**ed off!
It is easy to forget that Kurt Russell is such a top class actor, not because he makes bad films...far from it, (apart from Soldier) it is because he and Goldie keep themselves out off the limelight and are not at all controversial. Kurt does not seem to accept every script offered, unlike a lot of actors in later years that doesn’t care about their fan base, just their bank account. I had literally all but forgotten about this underrated but brilliant film. And to see it again after so long, this film is total entertainment and has an ending the adrenaline junkies will get their ultimate fix from. Like me, if you are a Kurt Russell fan and have not seen this then do it. If you just want a film with a bit off everything mixed in then here it is. It might make a few think about renewing that car breakdown cover...and to remember to never accept a lift from strangers!

Breakdown
*3 and a half out of 5*Breakdown sees a man (Kurt Russell) and his wife (Kathleen Quinlan) driving cross-country from Mass. to San Diego when their new car mysteriously breaks down. A truck driver stops and assists them by taking the wife to the nearest diner to phone for help but in reality is kidnapping her, causing her husband to begin a frantic search for her.I didn’t have many expectations going into Breakdown and honestly knew very little about it going in, due to me only finding out about it fairly recently. However pleasingly enough the film is a thoroughly entertaining, consistently tense hidden gem that deserves more attention. It may not reinvent the wheel in terms of its plot and the characters lack any development or substance, but damn if it doesn’t deliver pure B-movie fun.The mystery element is unfortunately the film’s weakest aspect, despite starting off well with an aura of menace and off kilter interactions with the local diner inhabitants the ‘dark secret’ of the town really isn’t particularly interesting or innovative. However it does allow for a solid vessel for Jeff (Russell) to desperately track down his wife and fight back against those against her. The ‘regular guy turned hero’ is a familiar arc, but luckily Russell’s charisma completely carries it.There is a fairly jarring switch in tone and scale around the 45 minute mark where the film goes from a slower burn investigative thriller to a completely off the rails car crashing bonanza and I was completely on board, though it is understandable if it is too ridiculous for some. However when Jeff begins fighting back utilising an intense truck driving clash and following choke inducing interrogation. The stunt work and car chase choreography is fantastic and the final sequence (and especially its satisfying finale) me grinning from ear to ear, and will certainly please fans of Death Proof, Duel & Joy Ride/Roadkill.Kurt Russell goes all in here and delivers a very charismatic performance that certainly carries a lot of the material. His transition from polite everyday guy to gun wielding manic desperation is a riot to watch play out. He and Kathleen Quinlan have decent chemistry, but she is (obviously due to the premise) substantially absent from the plot, but does her a strong finale moment. The antagonists are all suitably psychotic and ruthless, but they aren’t particularly memorable or original what’s in their motivations and cliched traits.Breakdown is a fun, chaotic and destruction heavy thrill ride. Though it’s basic plot and lack of character substance do hold it back. The stunt heavy vehicular carnage of the action sequences, charismatic lead performance and engaging pace definitely cement this as a popcorn watch.

perfect thriller
All a thriller should be, combining maximum adventure with maximum plausibility. Rises to a crescendo of excitement with superb action scenes. One of the best of the genre of honest decent folks being terrorised by the type of rednecks who vote for Donald Trump. It's up there with Deliverance. Superb.

An under-stated 90s gem.
Haven't seen this since it's first VHS release in the late 90s. Certainly such films would not work as well today with the advent of smart phones and so forth. But the film was tight and enjoyable. I've come to rely on semi-decent films like this to get me through bouts of insomnia...This ticks along nicely, suspensefully and is carried by nice performances from Kurt Russell and JT Walsh. A pleasantly diverting caper. It's not a classic classic, but it it'll do nicely!

TOP NOTCH ACTION THRILLER
Well this is such a great film, great plot and performances all round, it builds up and up on tension and suspense to a great climax. One criticism only and that is the quality of the dvd, and it now being 2019 where is the blu ray for this cracking good film! Disappointing!

Good old style film
I like Kurt Russell in films, you always know you are going to get a solid performance. I've docked one star only because it was predictable. A bit like reading a good book that you've read before. Enjoyable but no surprises. The action scenes were very good especially, the finale. Certainly worth a watch.

Dated
Those 90s films with annoying music..this was another one!! But it was okay..just. Pretty standard plot, which had some menace early on, but then went into a very standard formula. Some good action scenes, particularly in the culmination of the film....but for me it was a film of its time, and has little effect today.

This seller looks after their customers.
I ordered a used DVD, when the seller checked it out it was found to be not good enough to be sent to me. The Seller tested another DVD and it was found to be a good quality disk. The seller sent it too me and I had no problems with the DVD. I thanked the Seller for his efforts in obtaining a better DVD. Cliff
