Hercules DG305B Tablet Holder

Q: How much room (front to back) is there in the bottom 2 holders? I have the older version, but it’s too big for the iPad Air and it fell out and broke

It doesn't have much room, and the ball will pop out of the socket. I used my dremel tool with a cutting disc to cut a slot half way through the ball, the screwed in a small wide wood screw to spread the ball wider. Now it holds tightly and doesn't pop out. But there's still a limit to space if tilted too flat. But its usable. The ball socket was the biggest problem and repeated tries to contact hercules was useless. All you get was the auto reply then nothing.

Q: I have an iPad Pro in an otterbox. Will it fit this holder?

Yes it’s flexibl but probably just in landscape if it’s the larger one.

Q: Am I missing something? Seems great, but when you tighten it down, it just slips off the ball.

Check the instructions; slip the nut over the ball, squeeze the ball into the threaded sleeve (it requires a little pressure), then tighten down the nut on the threads. It works great. I use it with a heavy case on my iPad.

Q: can the ipad mount be put onto the mic stand "tube", upside down, so I can look upwards at my ipad, rather than downwards as in all of the pictures?

The iPad mount is on a ball swivel, so it can be rotated 360º. However, because the mount is designed with two L-shaped feet to support the iPad, if you rotated it 180º to be upside-down, those feet would be at the top. In that configuration I don't think the single foot would do a good job of holding the iPad securely.
