Recommend for whitling wood?

while it is a terrific knife in many ways, whittling wood is not what I would recommend. The blade mounting has flex on the single pivot end. The blade is not designed for sideway twisting. Its suited for household tasks and for having a sharp tool in your pocket. I like a shorter, heavier bladed knife for whittling'.

What kind of steel is the blade made from

When I purchased mine, reviewers were saying it is from Germany. I can't verify because it doesn't say. It holds a sharp edge for the amount of usage it has been through.
