293HD is quiet, powerful, and is easy to move around
Vornado fans move a lot of air with their patented designed grill (the shape of the blades and the plastic that extends out helps move air on this model as well). This model is comparable to http://www.amazon.com/Vornado-660-Air-Circulator-Speeds/dp/B0025QKUE8/ref=pd_sim_hg_5 - 54 watts (about 100 dollars with 4 speeds), http://www.amazon.com/Vornado-733B-Full-size-Whole-Circulator/dp/B000MI3HJQ/ref=pd_bxgy_hg_img_z - 84 watts (about 100 dollars with 3 speeds), http://www.amazon.com/Vornado-Full-Size-Circulator-Adustable-Height/dp/B000E5XNAK/ref=pd_sim_hg_6 - 84 watts (about 120-130 dollars with 3 speeds) and then finally the 293HD which is about 120-130 dollars (with 3 speeds). These fans are all presented in slightly different packages. The 660 model is all black, electric push button controls that allow you to go to 4 different speeds and includes a beep sound after the push (allows for push button shut off and on), and with a smaller stand than the HD can sit on counter tops and in smaller areas. The 733B has a different stand than the 660 model and is also black. The 783 extends upwards to 48 inches. If your a Vornado user already, or your looking to try out one of the best models, I recommend that you check out the models listed above and take some time to read a few reviews and take a look at the specs on the Vornado website. I recommend this product based on: - Air flow (all three setting are useful for different situations, many people will be able to sleep on the first setting and maybe even second setting)and this particular model has a protruding grey piece of plastic to help strengthen air flow over other Vornado's in the model's I included up above - Durability with thick plastic, heavy duty strong handle, strong-heavy metal base, good thick rubber feet on base (padding on the handle will likely wear down over time depending on how you use the fan, but otherwise will serve its purpose for quite awhile anyways) - 10 foot cord (this I find to be very helpful with fans, and includes a fuse at the end of the cord) - Easy to pick up and move (four screws hold the handle in place) and I see the handle holding up over the lifespan of the fan - Fan can be taken off the metal base, mounted (with mounting equipment included), and or used without the stand - 293HD is supposed to be best in dusty areas and sealed to withstand those types of conditions It's nice to see a Vornado fan in something different other than the usual Vornado black, white, or all grey models. Update: Nov. 16th 2016, still works the same years later with heavy usage. Recommend using a thicker rubber washer (found at the hardware store), over the one that is provided. The one that is provided fell apart after a few months of use, and didn't work very well to keep the fan in position. This is a great fan that is easy to move around and use. I recommend this Vornado 783 Full-Size Whole Room Air Circulator, Adjustable Height if you're looking for more air flow, and a better position off the ground. Both are different fans, great in their own unique way.

Worth the price. Robust fan with great air flow.
Strong airflow, built like a tank. It requires some basic assembly to attach the stand/leg (screw the plastic knobs on by hand, and pop the little rubber feet on the base) but no tools are required and it takes about 60 seconds. All other parts are already assembled. It has a nice robust 3-connector (grounded) cord. Switch is on top of the back area of the fan so it's easy to reach. High quality plastic (ABS maybe? I'm not a plastics expert but it feels strong but not brittle) and the base is a kind of very strong metal tubing with a textured glazing on it. It's put together with hefty looking philips screws so if you ever needed to open it up for any reason (say for repair) it would be easy to do. Have had another smaller Vornado fan for more than ten years and it continues to hold up great, and this one seems to be made with the same great quality. We use it in our house, even though it's sold as a shop fan. It is pleasant to have around. After having this for a week, I bought a second one because we like it so much. It makes some air noise at its highest speed, but of course it would. Absolutely zero mechanical noise that I can make out. At the low speed (other than OFF, there are three speeds... low, medium, high) it is reasonably quiet. Not VERY quiet but I can sleep with it running and it is just pleasant white noise. At the high speed it's a different matter; you hear strong air flow. Very powerful when you need it to be, and quieter when you need less air flow. There is no wobble or rattle. It feels really well made. An interrupt switch will not turn this off. When the power goes off, it will go off. When power comes back on, it will come back on. It doesn't have any lights on it (thankfully). It can be manually swiveled to point front, back, up, or even straight down. We've used it for quickly drying food on a plate at the low setting. It's pretty versatile even in its simplicity.

This thing moves air!
I use this fan in the bedroom to help circulate the air from the AC, and it works wonders. I bought one of their smaller models about 15 years ago, and it’s still going strong, so I decided to pick up this one. The quality is just as impressive. The fan is designed for easy cleaning—everything comes apart so you can remove any hair or grit that builds up around the blades. On the lowest setting, it's whisper quiet, yet it still moves a good amount of air, comparable to a cheap box fan on medium or high. On medium, you'll hear a slight whoosh, and it creates significant air pressure—enough to push air through a comforter or light blanket from five to ten feet away. On the highest setting, it does get pretty loud, with noticeable blade noise and a strong whooshing sound, but the amount of air it moves is impressive. The build quality is excellent. None of the parts feel delicate. The switch has a solid, quality feel to it, the blades are thick, and the fan's body is made of durable plastic that seems like it could withstand a strong impact. The stand is a sturdy metal tube. Overall, this fan feels like a "buy it for life" product, not something you'll be replacing anytime soon.

This is a great fan
This my 2nd one I've owned. The first fan lasted 15 years. I did have to lube the bearings once during that 15 years. I was so happy to see they still sold this model with the yellow plastic. What a great fan. So easy to clean. Really pushes the air. I highly recommend.

Expensive plastic, but lots to like
This fan is compact, lightweight and straightforward to operate. The technology of circulating air versus merely blowing air is striking. Instead of needing to be in the fan's line-of-fire to feel cool, the room's air is mixed to spread its coolness around. This requires that there be some cooler air to be mixed- such as from a window or from an air conditioner. The combination of this air circulator fan and another fan blowing lightly on you cools especially well. If the air in the room is hot, it will still be with this circulator fan operating. In that case, the circulator does not do much, and it is almost unpleasant, probably even more so than a traditional box fan, because this fan merely focuses hot air around you. I have not tested it as an exhaust fan, but it seems this would work for that too- and help remove smells and odors. The noise is slight on the lowest setting- fine for quietly working at a desk or sleeping. The medium setting is *much* louder. What I like about the efficiency of this fan is its potential to pay for itself. I don't have a track record of its affect on utility bills yet, but it makes an 81 degree air conditioner setting tolerable. At $120, it would take several years to pay for itself in utility savings, but it has that potential. For 5 stars, this would need to be made of sturdy, lightweight metal- not plastic. A cord wrapping mechanism for the 10 foot cord would be handy. UPDATE AFTER 7 YEARS: At about 7 years, this unit died. 5 year warranty. For this price, marketing and apparent build quality, that's not long enough. Simple electronics like this should last 10 years or more, like they used to, but alas, we live in a time of symbolism over substance, where true quality is hard to find, pretense is high and long-lasting has been defined down. This is now a $150(!) unit with recent inflation; expensive for this small, but powerful unit; Overall, I'm going to give it 3.5 stars (rounds to 4 stars).

Vornado 293HD
Was a bit disappointed in the noise level on low (I'm more sensitive to sound levels than most), however, given the high blade angle / high volume of air at low setting, and the well thought design / with a ball bearing motor, this is the only a small personal negative in contrast to all the remaining positive aspects. High quality unit in appearance, feel, and sound. Nice wall hanging brackets included. To be honest , it's still probably quieter on low than the majority of any comparable.(Update; what noise there is mostly just the air moving past the inlet/outlet grill guards) Looking forward to a long and versatile life for home construction projects, and as a smaller, portable, versatile / but efficient fan for vacationing with in hot weather and just want to sit outside at the end of the day. _______________ 8/9/13 Update Having used now for about a month with remodeling projects outside in our typical 3 digit Texas summer heat, this fan has really proven itself. Moves a lot of air, especially for its' size. Relatively lightweight and yet stable as I relocate it as necessary to best cool or ventilate the area I'm working in. The weight & overall smaller size makes this unit truly versatile & perfectly portable - I can just pick it up and reposition easily & quickly. Combined with the nice speed variations between the 3 speeds (unlike most big box store fans) makes this the best both close and some distance away fan. BTW I use all the speeds at one time or another depending on what I'm doing. Really like idea of the heavy duty, sealed die cast motor that can endure my masonry & drywall dust while surviving our 100+ temperatures all day. Easy to clean up. Unit's lower amperage draw allows plenty of other tools to run on same circuit / ext cord. Only con: Initially good, but quickly deteriorating from the heat (becoming loose) rubber feet. Will probably just glue in place. A great buy! Let's see how the longevity stacks up.

Great Fan! Super Happy! Mom Loves The Handle!
Yes The Knobs To Tighten The Fan To The Base Need Improvement, They Need To Be More Of A Wing Nut That You Can Get Leverage To Tighten The Fan To The Base, You Can't Really Grab These Knobs And Get Them Tight! The Rest Of The Fan Is Perfect And The Motor Looks To Be More Beefy Than All Of Our Other Vornado Fans. The Handle Is Great For My 87 Year Old Mom To Move It Around. The Price Is High But If The Motor Is A better Quality Than There Older Design Because We Have Had Problems With The Old Motors And Our Local Landfill Is Always Full Of Bad Vornado Motor Fans. Would Be Great If Vornado Would Send Us Some Up-Graded Mounting Knobs But I Guess I Can Always Find Some Better Knobs With The Same Treads That You Can Get Leverage To Tighten Them Up Better, I Have Strong Hands But Mom Could Never Tighten These Because There Is Nothing To Grab Onto. Or You Could Just Use NUTS So You Could Use A Little Wrench? I Might Go That Direction But Don't Over Tighten It Or You Will Break The Fan Housing, That Might Be Why Vornado Didn't Want You To Be Able To Tighten It? Just Be Careful Not To Over Tighten It! Just Enough To Allow The Fan To Move With Resistance Should Be Fine! All In All Its a 5 Star Fan! The Motor Itself Looks To Be Heavy Duty And Much Better Quality.

VORNADO 293 Heavy-Duty Shop Fan Air Circulator TEN STARS!!!
The Vornado 293 Heavy Duty Shop Fan is AMAZING! I live on the third floor of an old house which was turned into apartments many years ago. Due to heat rising and the lack of a good heating system, inside temps run as high as 80 degrees in the WINTER! I have been threatened with eviction if I open a window, but cannot leave an air conditioner in the window either. I was getting sick and chronic migraines hate the heat and I suffer from them. I had to think of something so I bought this fan. It is a powerhouse of a fan, but not loud at all. I have one room that is not heated at all so I pull the heat from that room into the rest of the apartment. I also set it up in other "strategic areas" of the house where, (due to lack of weather stripping,) air comes in through the cracks. This fan pulls in so much air within 10 minutes my place is totally cooled off. I can't wait to see how much I save this summer using it to circulate the air conditioning. I was put off by the price at first, but it is by far the best fan I have ever owned. It is amazingly quiet for such a powerful fan and when set on the lowest of 3 speeds it is barely audible. I am guessing I will be able to do without one of my 3 air conditioners this summer. My electric bill has not gone up and I could not be happier with this purchase. It is also very easy to clean and barely anything to do as far as assembly. Very long cord so you can put it just about anywhere in your home. I will never buy anything other than a Vornado from here on out. I even like how it looks! If I could give it ten stars I would!

Extremely well built fan
I just replaced my Canadian made Seabreeze Turbo-Aire that I owned for over 12 years with this Vornado 293HD circulator fan. So far I am very impressed by the build quality and operation. It is heavy duty and has some weight to it. The air throw is very good on all the speeds. The base is metal and very rigid. I read some had trouble with the base assembly. There are two washers per side. One is plastic and the other larger one is rubber. Make sure to slip the legs between the larger "rubber" washer and the knobs. This will prevent it from rotating on its own. The only issue I noticed is there seems to be a sharp/unfinished edge on the perimeter of the fan housing. When you advertise a product as PERFECT, something like this should not pass quality control.

Avoid
Update, Went from loving this fan to hating it. After a few months something is wrong with it and it is extremely loud on the lowest setting. I can’t keep it on the low setting at all because the noise is so irritating. Huge waste of money.

It's NOT a gimmick! Perfect with a small caveat!
I love this fan! I point mine diagonally up and across the room to make a nice "vortex." Basically it moves air very comfortably just like the pictures with the of "air flow" graphics. I thought those were just a gimmick! I don't even point the fan towards the bed. Even without being in direct contact with the blowing air. You can feel how it makes the air around the room. It's a very pleasant and not over stimulating effect perfect for sleeping. My only issue is that the big nuts on the side of the fan need washers to protect the plastic and prevent it from loosening when picking up the fan. That's an easy enough fix though, just 2 washers from home depot. Love this fan!
