Pidgin to da Max

Lost the copy I bought in 1999 when my family moved to the Big Island and lived there for seven years. I thought I’d buy another for a “small kid” days family party, but this is definitely not the same book even though the cover is. There’s no aloha in it anymore —it’s snarky and has major attitude.When living there a person just picks up Pidgin and Hawaiian words as they are constantly being spoken but in this book, it’s no longer shown as a soft and friendly language but as more of a weapon against the haoles. Sad!

This digital version is not like the printed copy. It lacks the side views the printed copy has. I will not recommend this apprised to the printed copy.

I bought my first book years ago. I bought this one for a gift

Great little book, easy to read and summarizes majority of local pidgin words/phrases used in daily conversation by many Hawaiians, which as a long time haole resident love to hear.

I think pidgin is one of those cultural touchstones by which people with common backgrounds recognize each other and the rest of us should just butt out. At least not try to use more than a word or two with the locals. But, if you're going to spend time here, why not take the opportunity to gain some insight on the experience of growing up in Hawaii? It's a real chopsuey of ethnicities and all must endure some ribbing. The reader must as well; many definitions use other pidgin words. Makai is defined as the opposite mauka and vice-versa. If you can't figure it out, there's always the internet.Cartooning is an underrated art form IMHO and these are among the best. They capture facial expressions wonderfully and each is worth a thousand words of text as they say.I would give 5 stars for the book and one star for the Kindle version. On the Kindle at least half of the cartoons appear with the top 10% or so duplicated and the bottom 10% missing. Some are only partly visible. The image resolution could be better. Some of the text cannot be seen at all and many pages are completely blank. Some text gets wrapped leaving a single character on a line. It's better in Landscape mode, but still bad. Fortunately, you can bring it up in the Cloud Reader on a PC to see what you're missing. Hyperlinks would be great in a book like this, but there are none. I'm sure there is a conflict between adapting content to a new medium (Kindle) and preserving the look of the original print version but I think too little effort was spent on it here.But, if you like to laugh, like to learn, and are interested in Hawaii, this book is an essential classic.

This is great fun! It is more designed for people who have had some exposure to Hawaiian pidgin in the past, rather than people who have never heard of pidgin. That said, it is well constructed and has great illustrations.

Print too small when viewed- terrible resolution when enlarged

I bought this book for one of my "mainland" cousin...trying to bring her up to par! Lol! It's a good book and the illustrations are funny. It's a great book for those who visit our islands frequently or those who plan to visit for the first time and want to brush up on the lingo. You want to be able to come here and not leave this place wondering what the heck we were saying to you! Lol!

まず爆笑、また爆笑。さらには、"ume", "musubi","obachan"など穏当なものからXXXなものまで、日本語の語彙が相当取り込まれているのに感心したり、その他各国の言葉が織り込まれているのを見て、改めてハワイというのは複合民族国家なのだなと感じます。また、全編盛り込まれた漫画がまたおかしい。入手できる時は即買いましょう。

ハワイに住むようになった様々な国からの移住者の間で生まれ、ハワイで実際に使われてピジンイングリッシュの辞書のような本です。漫画的なイラストも多いので分かりやすく、また日本語からそのままピジンイングリッシュになった言葉も多いので読み物としても楽しいですよ。
