The Frey Saga Book II: Pieces of Eight

A GREAT disappointment
I'm sorry to say that this was an absolutely ridiculous story. It's a shame because the first book showed real promise. In the first book Frey was a curious, strong-willed, determined character, taking on a quest entirely on her own. In this second book she is insipid, allows herself to be bossed around and bullied without making a stand in any way as though she is a biddable child and not the supposed leader of an entire race. Yes, she has the binding on her mind, but that shouldn't stop her from taking charge from time to time, most especially when it comes to her own life. After all, she did it in the first book. Instead, she allows everyone, especially Chevelle, to dictate terms at every turn instead of putting her foot down and saying 'This is my life and I need to know these things no matter what it will do to me' or maybe even 'Get out of my room, I want to be alone'. This was not the character I glimpsed in the first book.As for the binding, does she HAVE to pass out EVERY time she remembers something significant. Can't she at least attempt to push through it all from time to time in order to display the type of strength needed to fulfill her destiny? It's rather pathetic and harks back to the Ivanhoe era when damsels were in distress and fainted at every opportunity. She's supposed to be a LEADER.Moreover, the story itself is insipid: they're off on a quest, no they come back, then they're off again. All of this is interspersed with a lot of fainting, collapsing, rescuing and recuperation with regular intervals of Frey being shoved behind someone for her protection. Also, with all the bossing and bullying and her own wishy-washy character, Frey would have been ordered to stay behind 'for her own protection' if the book and author had been consistent, but no, the others indulge her (she doesn't persuade or command them) in allowing her to come along, even with all of the collapsing! It's ridiculous.I am not getting any more of these books.

Good but frustrating
As stated, this was a good book but very frustrating. The illustration on the front cover is deceiving. It shows a strong woman and yet in the story she blacks out at EVERYTHING she hears, at one sentence or realization. You basically learn next to nothing except in bits and she spends 70% of the book asleep, blacked out or so confused in her own head that you learn nothing. I kept wanting to scream at her to wake up and demand an answer. It tells me nothing as to who everyone is to her besides chavelle and anvil and what this story is about. She comes up with some messed up conclusions and then faints when she hears the truth, which is the complete opposite. The story was choppy, just like her mind which I got but she portrayed herself as weak. Never the less an ok 3 hrs spent reading.

Perhaps I should have taken a break
I enjoyed Frey so much I bought Pieces of Eight (the second book) and just carried on reading. I was hoping the character development would continue and drive the storyline. It may be me, but, I found the second book frustrating in its sloth. I wanted it to move on and I feel the whole second book story could have been dealt with in a chapter or two. Perhaps; as I said in my title, it was me expecting too much. The writing however is excellent, making me continue with the read, but, towards the end, in the hope the story would pep up a bit. I am contemplating buying Molly and I will consider the third in the series.

Can't wait for Book 3!!!
I so enjoyed the first book of this series, I downloaded this one straight away on my Kindle and carried on reading! I read traveling to work, lunchtime, traveling home and in the evening - couldn't put it down! It's a good combination of love story and drama. The twists and turns style from the first book carry on into this one and you just have to keep reading to find out what's going to happen next. The only disappointment is book 3 is not due out until later this year - although I have just downloaded "Molly" which sits between this and book 3. So glad I took a chance on the first book and now need to see what else Melissa Wright has written.

Loved it!
I was ready to give up on the series as the first book left far too many questions un-answered! Most were answered in the second book. I really enjoyed the first book and was pleasantly surprised to see the story not lacking in the second one.

Good fun fast read
When I started this series of books I had no idea what this was going to be like. I'm not usually into fantasy, I generally prefer supernatural horror. However I'm just starting book three & I only picked up book one three days ago!I've really enjoyed the wonderfully colorful characters with their incredible powers. The story moved seamlessly from one book to another.I've really enjoyed these fast reading gems & look forward to finding out about the rest of their story.

Good story, but too much fainting!
I like the story, I read the first and now the second book - and I'll go on to read the third... but really the author seems a bit unimaginative at times, with Freya fainting all around the place, like she had in the first book... but I have hope for the 3rd book, now that she has her mind back then surely there will be no fainting anymore?!

it was okay
i really enjoyed the frey so when i discovered there was a second book i didnt hesitate. but having just finished it i cant help feeling slightly annoyed it took until the last page for freya to stop being so frustratingly weak and pathetically wimpy. not sure if i will buy book three. the writing was good and plot wasnt bad but freya just annoyed me in all honesty and ruby seemed to be the only character described well enough to give her emotions and responses a familiar predictability.
