Replacing a Wireless Router
I've only given this a 4 (probably a 4.5) as it took an hour to install and involved me sitting on the phone with my ISP and performing 3 reboots, a "factory reset" and a manual install on it. But, now it's working, it's great and connected FAR more quickly to my work laptop (so the 2nd and subsequent connections are clearly less stressful). If anyone from Netgear reads these reviews then PLEASE PLEASE do not stop producing wired modem/routers. I'd installed a wireless router a couple of weeks ago and, as a migraine sufferer, was sensitive to the "radiation" and it was giving off a very strong hot-plastic smell (strong smells can trigger migraines anyway).I tried to tell myself it was maybe psychosomatic but, after a week of having it on 10 hours a day (working from home) I decided there was no point possibly risking my health as my migraines had increased and I was getting a strange burning sensation in back of my throat. I tried all kinds of locations (closer to the pc, halfway up the stairs) and still felt a bit dizzy when it was on. So I've gone back to wired.Another point though - that refers to both the wireless and wired routers. Does anyone else's get so HOT ? I make sure I always turn it off at the mains, when it's not in use, as they both got extremely hot....and mainly on the underside. But otherwise happy. And delivery was VERY swift.

Great, mount vertically and backup your settings!
Netgear DG834 ADSL2+ Modem, Wired Router with 4-port 10/100 Mbps SwitchIt's fine, no problems (almost 2 years on) other than when we had a new electric meter fitted, and the necessary shut off of mains power (to fit the meter) seemed to cause microprocessor controlled devices to behave erratically.Needed to reset SatTV boxes and I thought that this router was on the way out because it kept dropping the connection and reconnecting a few minutes later. However, when I pushed the reset button and reloaded the settings it worked fine, no more drop outs.So once you have yours set up, and working right, do take the time to backup the settings. There is an option within the control application to save the settings to your location of choice. This makes recovering from a reset much quicker.Another handy feature of this device is that you can mount it vertically, thus taking up less precious desk space and improving air flow around the device.

Problems with VPN pass through
NB. This applies to the DG834 v4 router.Easy to set up, normal internet access seemed reliable and was fast enough (6100 kbps on a 6500 kbps capped line). The problem came when I tried to connect to my workplace via a VPN client. The maximum rate I could get was 48kbps (no better than dial up). Simply swapping the DG834 router out for my old DrayTek router resulted in an increase to 1600bps (more than 33 times faster!). So it was definitely a problem with the DG834. After a week of efforts, Netgear support were unable to resolve the problem.I returned the DG834 and got a refund. If you just want basic internet access and have no need for the VPN pass though functionality then this router should be fine for you.

Easiest piece of kit in the world
Anyone wishing to purchase this will have looked at the numerous reviews already left for this piece of kit but I felt I had to add my comments as I have never come across something that worked first time, out of the box, with no 'tweaking' or 'fiddling' necessary.I am no techie and wanted something that I could just plug in and forget about and I am certainly NOT disappointed. The instructions were clear, concise and accurate which meant that when they told me I would see a certain message on my monitor, that's exactly what I had.The whole process was fuss free and very quick. The people at NetGear should be very smug (and deservedly so) with themselves for creating something that does exactly what it says on the tin.

Netgear DG834 ADSL Wired Router and Windows 7
I bought this ADSL wired router as my old BT Voyager tended to drop the connection two or three times an hour. Despite the ease of setup (Windows 7) the installation was stuck on the "detecting your internet connection" stage. I was lucky enough to still be able to connect to the internet using the old Voyager, and found a blog dealing with just this problem. The solution? Easy when you know how, reset the router, click on the Start Button, and type in the "Search programs and files box" this command; ipconfig /flushdns. This came from Netgear telephone support, shame they didn't include this tip in their documentation. Now it's up an running, no problems.

Very good product, easy to use
I wanted the router so I can link up ps2 and 2 pcs. It was exteremely easy to set up although the firewall is slightly harder to configure. The most common ports on the firewall are open already so a lot of things will work on there with no configuration. The settings screen is quite easy to understand as help is provided all over the place. You set up services and then you use those services to set up firewall rules. Each rule can be turned on or off so as you can close down ports that arent been used for more security.Theres also features to route traffic to certain ip. Pretty much any feature you could think of is included meaning that your internet connection is not limited in any way by the firewall.High speeds, good security, excellent features, nice design and easy to use.

A superb product...
Being new to routers, I was a little unsure just what I was letting myself into. I need not have worried. It was easy to connect to my computer, everything was in the box. The DG834 practically sets itself up and yes, it works fine with FIREFOX as a browser. The default security settings completely masked me from the internet with no open ports even with my software firewall switched off! (I switched it back on again after testing - just in case!). Amazon service very good too. You can add wireless connectivity later if you want to with an adaptor from Netgear.
