Kyanite is derived from the word "kyanos," meaning "deep blue". This is an excellent description of most kyanites' colour, although it can occur in other colours such as white, orange, and black (such as this kind). Its common uses, (other than as a gemstone) include being crafted into porcelain fixtures and dishware. Kyanite is commonly associated with the throat chakra.
