Product Description This is the absorbing true story of Venetian explorer Marco Poloยs arduous trek to the Eastยand beyond. The story follows Marco (Ian Somerhalder) as he is enlisted to accompany a pair of priests to the court of Kublai Khan (Golden Globe winner Brian Dennehy), Mongol conqueror of the East. Featuring Desiree Siahaan and BD Wong, Marco Polo is a gripping look at two of world historyยs most enigmatic men and a sensuous vision of a legendary time and place. Now available for the first time on DVD in an extended version featuring all-new bonus features! Literally, itยs the adventure of a lifetime. .com Marco Polo was a 13th-century explorer whose epic journey from Venice to Asia and beyond has fascinated the world for centuries. This two-part, 176-minute miniseries is a realistic first-person retrospective based on the published journals of Marco Polo in which viewers are treated to Marco Polo's (Lost's Ian Somerhalder) reminiscing about his travels from Venice through what is now Russia and Iran to China and beyond. Considered a barbarian in China, Polo developed an unusual relationship with China's leader Kublai Kahn (Brian Dennehy), becoming a trusted advisor and explorer under the Kahn while simultaneously remaining under the constant suspicion of the court. Nonetheless, Kublai Kahn sent Polo to explore then-unknown places like (modern-day) Thailand, Pakistan, India, Vietnam, and the Spice Islands where he encountered countless wonders, a host of foreign concepts, and new and exciting peoples. Shot entirely in China, viewers are transported to 13th-century China where they experience first-hand Marco Polo's incredible drive to explore unseen lands, the physical and emotional hardships of his journey, and his sense of exhilaration and wonderment on traveling through new lands. Action and adventure abound throughout the production, balanced by a careful exploration of the intricacies of Polo's relationship with the Kahn, his servant Pedro (B.D. Wong), and the women of the court Temulun and Kensai (both played by Desiree Slahaan). Just as fascinating as the actual journey is the depiction of the man Marco Polo; his commitment to truth, openness to new concepts, unceasing quest for knowledge, sense of duty, and seemingly instinctive understanding of human nature. This is a gripping, timeless telling of a classic adventure that's sure to be a favorite with history buffs, adventure lovers, and anyone who loves a good story. (Ages 10 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

UNSUBTITLED FILMS ARE UNUNDERSTANDABLE
Blu-ray arrived very quickly and in great condition. Thanks Santa Clara Books. 3 and a half stars. Widescreen, 177 minutes, very good transfer from Mill Creek, no subtitles or extras. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE ARE NO SUBTITLES ON FILMS WITH NUMEROUS ACCENTS, EVEN AMERICAN FILMS!! Decent 2 part film entertains, but NEEDS SUBTITLES!! Not sure how Brian Dennehy got the part of Kublai Khan, he's a decent actor but...nonetheless entertaining, told in flashbacks. Great photography.

A Darker View of Marco Polo
Fans of Marco Polo, the amazing Italian 13th century traveler and adventurer, get a darker view of him coupled with a very unflattering portrayal of the emperor Kublai Kahn. This foreshadows the 2014 Netflix 2-season series. This is in contrast to the earlier exciting lighter view: "Genghis Kahn" (1965) with Omar Sharif, "Marco the Magnificent" (1965) with Horst Buchholz and Anthony Quinn (an excellent Kublai Kahn), and "Marco!" (1973) with Desi Arnaz, Jr and Zero Mostel (a loveable Kublai Kahn). Marco Polo lived an amazing, heroic, and tragic life--one of the giants of yesteryear. Experience the dramatization of such an interesting historical event: the greatest empire, the Mongol Empire.

Nice Visuals, But Overall Pretty Boring
There are several reviews that discuss the historical accuracy of this film, but my review of Hallmark's made for TV movie, Marco Polo is based mostly on its entertainment value. The sets and costumes were very nice, but the story was very slow paced and became tedious to watch. Some of the fighting scenes were good and it was interesting to see B.D. Wong ("Pedro") performing martial arts.Historically, Kublai Khan wished to meet with Marco Polo because he had never seen a European before. The casting of Brian Dennehy as Kublai Khan was a poor decision. It's offensive enough seeing a Caucasian actor in an Asian role, but on top of that, his acting was painfully bad.I suppose seeing this movie might get some people interested in reading Marco Polo's book and learning more about that part of history. Probably more interesting than watching this made for TV movie.

Enjoyable Even Though It Has the Look of a B Movie
This has the look of an after school special with acting to match; however, I have to confess to being drawn into the story. To think that it's TRUE that a Venetian went to CHINA in the 1300s and explored all that unknown, unmapped territory. It must have been an incredible adventure to see so many weird and wonderful things. It definitely inspires the traveler in me. I enjoyed the story. One comment though- why Brian Dennehy as Khan? Actually, he holds his own, but it doesn't work visually. It's a very strange choice.

Maybe
I bought this along with other historical themed movies one day with the full intentions of watching it. I have no idea where my family put it and I don't seem to really care. Who knows? Maybe one day I will come across it and actually get the chance to see it. Hope it's good.

Ok dated story
Plays like a serial movie from the 30's. Far cry from any reality. Gary Cooper's Marco Polo from the 30's is far better.

terrible
Retitling and re-packaging of material has long been used to sell material.Such tactics can not hide rubbish but by then the seller has tyour money.I would ask that such products are clearly labelled as "previously released as "This is a terrible film trying to interest, by retitling, those who enjoy the historical military epic.If you like that genre don't buy this !

Seen better...
Storyline is kind of okay, personally I love Ian Somerhalder and this may be the only reason I persevered until the end. A bit slow in places, but overall rates as OK - plot OK, but have to say that although I have watched it I do not think I will ever watch it again.
