You will never see Matthew McConaughey in a hotter role!
You will never see Matthew McConaughey in a better role. He was paired with Christian Bale for the lead character and they were electric on screen. Matthew was in insanely good shape, shaved bald, and had a hard militant rebellious exterior that screamed angry bitter American soldier; he was cast perfectly for this role. The dragon was so terrifyingly real looking that you forgot it was supposed to be fiction. The movie is worth watching several times just to grasp the graphics and the work that went into making it. Excellent movie.

Underappreciated but very good
This movie does not get enough love. Yes, it was marketed in such a way (at theatrical release) that we got the impression you'd see the downfall of humanity but you don't. You get a news montage at the beginning and that's all. But once you accept this movie for what it is---a POST apocalyptic thriller---it's very good. The actors shine, especially Matthew Mccounaghy (this might be my favorite role of his, alongside Dallas Buyers Club), and the dragons look great. The atmosphere is thick and grim. It need more action but still a great movie.

Blu-ray release is a fantastic upgrade on the DVD
The movie "Reign of Fire" remains one of my favorite movies. It has precisely the right balance of character and action to keep me engrossed in the proceedings. I had seen 1981's "Dragonslayer" at the cinema while growing up in the U.K. and had been wowed by the special effects - however, that dated effort (made before the advent of CGI) pales in comparison to the dragons that are on display in "Reign of Fire." Here are dragons that are so lifelike, that you would almost believe that dragons exist. The movie is largely set in Northumberland, though the Northumberland on display here looks nothing like the Northumberland I grew up in. It is a rugged outpost for human survivors of the dragon attacks and Christian Bale proves that his childhood performance in Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun" was no fluke. Before he would become internationally known as Batman, Bale was quietly appearing in a wide variety of film roles. Also a surprise is Matthew McConaughey who eschews his usual tame roles as an action hero. He plays Van Zan, a leader of American dragon slayers arriving in the U.K. to do battle with the dragons. The movie heats up (pun intended) along with the action. So, how does this Blu-ray edition stack up to the previous DVD - extremely well in fact for one of the first movies to be released in the then fledgling format.Disney lives up to its sterling standard with this flawless AVC codec transfer. Detail is exceptional with some terrific facial detail and those unfamiliar Northumberland rocky dwellings. The color palette is also pleasing with well balanced reds and oranges for the dragon's fire breathing and black levels unswervingly excellent. The previous DVD version looks lifeless and drab by comparison. The audio quality on the disc is another standout effort which puts the subpar DVD release to shame. Disney have mixed this audio extremely well, delivering outstanding 5.1 PCM tracks with active and aurally exciting surround presentations. The audio track really comes to life as dragons fly from side to side and from front to back with such a 360° enveloping that it needs to be heard to be believed. This track will put your surround system to the test.Toss out that low definition DVD because all the special features from that release have been ported over to the Blu-ray, in addition to a Blu-ray exclusive 1080p HD trailer for the movie. Included on this release of "Reign of Fire" is the previously released "Breathing Life into the Terror," and "If You Can't Take the Heat" in addition to the rather dry audio commentary by director Rob Bowman (who spends too much time in my opinion on the technical side of the production) and the original theatrical trailer. Together it's not an overly impressive set of features, but it's pleasing to see that this Blu-ray makes the DVD release irrelevant. And that really is the best way to sum up this Blu-ray release. The standard def DVD is unsurprisingly overshadowed by this high definition Blu-ray which bests the DVD in every single department. Use the DVD as a coaster because once you have seen "Reign of Fire" in high definition Blu-ray you will never want to watch it in standard def DVD ever again.

Fair to Middling Fantasy Flick
Ever wonder what would happen if dragons existed in the early 21st century? Well wonder no more! The story picks up well after the winged beasts have obliterated nearly all of mankind by way of montage. Quinn Abercromby (Christian Bale) leads a group of survivors holed up in an ancient citadel; post-apocalyptic script writing 101 tells us that he must be an idealistic man who has managed to keep some form of civilized society running despite the hardships (and his own grave personal loss), but his followers have begun to give up hope for the future and question his leadership. When a group of strangers led by Denton Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey) show up at the gates, Quinn's status as leader becomes even less secure. And oh, by the way, there are still dragons flying around and laying waste to any trucks, minor characters, or tomatoes they see.As one would expect in a CGI-heavy film 15 years old, the effects look a bit dated. The aforementioned screenplay sticks to the tried & true throughout, ruining whatever suspense might have been found. Gaping plot holes riddle every part of the story. Still, this is not a terrible choice for a lazy movie night in the same vein as flicks like "Armageddon" and "Independence Day", albeit with far less in the way of comic relief. The principals give what little effort is required to play their roles, and there's enough in the way of man vs. dragon combat to keep your eyes off the popcorn bowl, even if you know how each battle is going to end.
