Q: Can this go in a fish tank, or will it rust?

I would say no, though that is a neat idea. The space shuttle itself is the only metal part and would probably rust or corrode underwater. The other issue Is that even if this were entirely plastic (or if you do find an all-plastic space shuttle) I would be concerned that the paint might leach into the water and prove harmful to the fish.

Q: Do the rocket boosters separate from the external tank?

I got as a gift to mount on Picture Frame but read product description: Product description This 3" die cast space shuttle with plastic booster rockets sits on the launch pad right on your desk.
